Donations made during In the Heights to benefit Puerto Rico relief

On Thursday, September 20, SLOC dedicated their “pay as you will” preview performance to the Hispanic Federation’s Unidos Campaign for relief and recovery in Puerto Rico. Between the preview performance and donations made online, we have raised approximately $2,792 so far. A year has passed since Hurricane Maria made landfall, and the people of Puerto Rico are still struggling to recover from the destruction caused. In The Heights celebrates the vibrant culture that is at the root of these communities, and SLOC is using this remarkable show to let them know that we are here and all belong to the same human community.

Donations can still be made during the run of the production! Visit the Box Office the evening you attend the show to donate by cash, check, or credit card, or go to our SLOC donation page, select “Hispanic Federation: Relief for Puerto Rico” as your Donation Campaign, and donate electronically!

“This brilliant work made by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda made almost 20 years ago still speaks so poignantly to issues of gentrification and displacement many latinx communities are experiencing to this day. It is also a powerful reminder of the ways that our communities have used music, the arts, and strong familial connections to survive and heal through our most difficult moments. Puerto Rico today is a perfect example of this strength, as survivors of last year’s natural and unnatural disasters have so powerfully brought our ancestral tools for healing and justice into this present moment to offer creative solutions to the problems they are facing today.”
~Taini Asili, cast member of In The Heights and New York based Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, bandleader and activist
