Become a Schenectady Light Opera
It takes many hands to produce a musical. At SLOC everything you see on stage has been created by dedicated volunteers.
If you would like to be involved in show production, there are many ways you can help, whether you are an experienced designer or have always wanted to learn more about backstage theater.
Creating a setting for the show - from elaborate castles to simpler interiors, every musical has a setting which starts with the vision of the director and set designer and takes many hands to bring it to life.
Without lights the setting, the actors and the audience would be left in the dark. The lighting designer works with the director to create the mood of each scene. Volunteers then hang, gel and focus the lights. During the run of the show, volunteers run the lighting board, spotlight and special effects.
The beautiful costumes you see on stage are the result of hours of work by the Costume Designer and his/her crew of dedicated volunteers.
Volunteers are also needed for sound design and execution, hair, makeup, stage management and backstage crew.
Ushers, House Managers and Box Office Staff
As an audience member, you know how important it is to be able to get information about the theater, buy your ticket, and find your seat. Our audience services volunteers make this possible by answering your questions, processing your order and showing you to your seat.
SLOC owns and operates the three buildings on the Performing Arts Center Campus, as well as an off site set facility. As you can imagine there is a good deal of maintenance involved with keeping up these properties. While some jobs need to be contracted out, routine maintenance, such as painting, cleaning and grounds maintenance can be done by volunteers. We often put out a call for this type of help.
There are many administrative tasks that go on behind the scenes to enable us to bring our audiences quality musical theater, such as mailings, advertising and fund raising. Teams of volunteers make these the things happen.
