Jean Clarke

Upstate New York was an area rich in community theater. For over fifty years, Jean and Varro immersed themselves in backstage activities with the Schenectady Light Opera Company and Schenectady Civic Players. Jean was masterful at managing ticket sales. Jean served as VP and a Board Member for SLOC. Jean also appeared on stage, as a chorus member in 1971: Schenectady Light Opera, In Concert. Together, Jean and her husband Varro, partnered as producers for many shows for both groups. Their love for theater continued as dedicated volunteer ushers at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady and the Lied Center in Lincoln.

JEAN and VARRO CLARKE had been active SLOC and Schenectady Civic participants for many years. Each had been on the SLOC Board and chaired numerous committees. Together they have produced Grease (1981), Candide (1981), Shenandoah (1980), A Little Night Music (1978), and Carnival (1977). Their son Jack was Oliver in the 1971 production.

Jean and Varro were both honored together, with the Etta Moore Award and the Thelma Zeh Gallery of Honor Award. Richly deserved!

Recently, Varro passed away. Now, Jean is gone. A lovely couple, that in even death refused to be separated. Their service and commitment to local theater, especially SLOC will always be remembered and cherished.
