The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame delivers a sweeping, emotionally charged musical inspired by Victor Hugo’s classic novel and the beloved Disney film. With a soaring Menken/Schwartz score, powerful choral writing, and a story of love, justice, and belonging, it follows Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Frollo in a gripping battle between compassion and cruelty.

This is a youth production that will be presented as part of SLOC’s main stage season.  All roles will be cast with performers entering grades 9 through 12 in September.

  • QUASIMODO (Male presenting) The bell-ringer of Notre Dame — lonely, big-hearted, and brave when it counts. His vivid imagination brings the bells and gargoyles to life. (Bb2–Bb4 tenor)
  • CLAUDE FROLLO (Male presenting) Archdeacon of Notre Dame and Quasimodo’s guardian — powerful, calculating, manipulative, and obsessive. (E2–D4 bass/baritone)
  • ESMERALDA (Female presenting) A free-spirited Romani woman with a fierce sense of justice. Compassionate and bold, she defies Frollo and reluctantly falls for Phoebus. (Eb3–Db5 mezzo soprano)
  • CAPTAIN PHOEBUS DE MARTIN (Male presenting) The new Captain of the Cathedral Guard — charming and overconfident, but with a strong moral compass. (Ab2–Ab4 tenor/baritenor)
  • CLOPIN TROUILLEFOU (Male or female presenting) The clever, charismatic Leader of the Roma — witty and theatrical with a darker side beneath the performance. (C3–G4 tenor)
  • CONGREGATION (Any) Roma, gargoyles, soldiers, and citizens of Paris. The ensemble in this show is very involved musically and theatrically, and secondary principals listed below will be portrayed from actors within the ensemble in ‘story theater’ style. Those characters include:

    • FLORIKA (Female presenting) A Romani woman and Quasimodo’s mother. (C#4–F5/opt. up to D6 soprano)
    • FATHER DUPIN (Male presenting) A priest of Notre Dame and guardian to Claude and Jehan. (C4–A4 baritone)

    • MADAM (Female presenting) Owner of a brothel and safe haven for the Roma.
